Following the success of the "Seeds of Change" film, CoELIB, in partnership with the Transforming African Agricultural Universities to Meaningfully Contribute to Africa’s Growth and Development (TAGDev 2.0) project, has released “SHIELD”, a short film that seeks to raise awareness about Egerton University's safeguarding and inclusion policy to promote student well-being, equality, and a safe academic environment.
Produced by CoELIB Media, SHIELD follows the story of Stella, a blind university student who undergoes discrimination while pursuing her education. Her braille machine becomes a source of ridicule in class, with the lecturer deliberately forgetting to submit her braille exam for transcription; she, however, faces the situation with resilience.
The film was born out of the need to simplify Egerton University's safeguarding and inclusion policies while raising awareness about them. Many students and staff are not aware of the existence of the policies. SHIELD humanises the policies, sparks conversations, and encourages a more inclusive and responsive university culture.
CoELIB’s experience in media and storytelling serves as a powerful resource for addressing pressing societal needs across domains. Through film and media, CoELIB helps raise institutional awareness and strengthen realignment to ensure that development does not yield marginalisation.
Learning environments continue to evolve, and CoELIB is staying at the centre of this evolution, ensuring student welfare remains a key priority by leading conversations and promoting empathy through creative media. The organization will continue to help institutions create spaces that nurture personal growth, aligning closely with the core principles of positive youth development.
