Livestock development in Africa remains a key driver of socio-economic transformation and resilience in farming communities for Africa. This development is vital for the continent to meet sustainable development goals and to address other global challenges of our time.
The AABNet (The African Animal Breeding Network) is a newly established pan African initiative established by COELIB and its partners to develop the capacity and knowledge transfer for animal breeding and creating innovations to support livestock genetic improvement in Africa.
The strategic objectives of AABNet are: Multi-country genetic evaluation, Professional development, Advocacy and awareness and business development, and
Collaboration, networking and partnerships. These pillars shall be addressed and attained through:
- Multi-country genetic evaluation to support decisions and inform genetic merits of livestock germplasms
- Professional development linked to talent and technology incubation
- Advocacy and awareness, business development linked to livestock genetic improvement
- Innovative partnerships to support equitable collaborations between academia, public sector and governments, private sector and livestock farmers’ organisations.
The AABNet will create sustainable interfaces for strong and long-term engagement between academic, industry, farmer-organisations (including breed associations), public sector, philanthropic and development agencies to drive the development and dissemination on livestock improved genetics and broader genetic improvement solutions in Africa.
