The 'Daughter of Shompole' short film by Coelib Media wins the #NikoGBVSmart festival.

The film produced by Prof. Alexander K. Kahi takes us through the lives of three young girls who risked their lives fleeing the knife. The girls’ ambition to pull a successful escape through the forest into the city is fuelled by the fear that their father would catch up with them and subject them to the painful cultural practice.

Their thirst for salvation is cut short when their first-born sister, Nailantei, is hit by an oncoming vehicle in a rather ugly accident.

“I believe that this is just the first of many African stories that we are ready to tell through film and art.” Said Amadi Lawrence, the lead actor (Mapenai) in the film.

When asked about his contribution to the Kenyan film industry, the director of the film, Moses Irungu, had this to say: “In the spirit of producing impactful and original African content that is true and relatable to a Pan-African audience, I find joy and motivation when our stories reach far and wide”.

These words were reiterated by the Script-writer and author Gabriel Kanja, who after objective reflection, as he narrated, felt the urge to tell the unspoken pains of many young girls in Kenya.

“In our next film, we shall turn our focus on the uncelebrated African heritage and rich diversity. That is what we want to do, tell all our pains and share our joys as Kenyans to the world through our creative space.”
